The story of how Cherepovetsky was foundeda monastery, every local resident knows. According to legend, the foundation of the monastery was as follows. One Sunday afternoon, along Sheksna in Beloozero a wealthy Moscow merchant was sailing. Suddenly, everything around it began to darken and the boat with goods ran aground. Struck by what had happened, the merchant began to pray furiously and ask for help. Unexpectedly, a miracle happened before his eyes - the mountain, which was nearby, began to burn, and because of it emanated rays of light, as if pointing the way to it. As soon as the boat could take off the can, the fire on the mountain disappeared.

Shocked by his unexpected salvation, the merchantHe ascended the mountain and was amazed at the sight that had opened before him. Two rivers with silver ribbons crossed the lowlands, abundantly overgrown with forests. The rescued merchant noted this place by installing a wooden cross to return a year later to the mountain and put a small chapel here.

According to experts who studied the legend of thethe basis of the monastery, the merchant, who placed the first chapel on the mountain and the founder of the monastery Theodosius, is one and the same person.
