The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo - waswas founded in 1244. Until 1507, the city was called Vrhbosna. The capital of Bosnia is located on the territory of one of the two constituent communities of the country. Sarajevo is the industrial and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the city there are industrial enterprises, the Academy of Sciences and Arts, the National Museum, the University and the Art Gallery.

The capital of Bosnia is located in the central partcountry, in the Sarevo Valley, surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. The city is surrounded on all sides by densely overgrown with hills and five mountains, the highest of which is Mount Treskavik, which is 2088 meters high. The other four mountains are slightly inferior in height to Traskavik and are also known as the Olympic Mountains of Sarajevo. The city itself also has a hilly landscape, which immediately catches the eye when looking at the steeply rising streets and houses built on the slopes of the hills. Through the center of the city from east to west the Milyatka River flows.

The capital of Bosnia has a moderate continentalclimate, characterized by a not very cold winter and not so hot in summer. The temperature in January is on the average -1 degrees, and in July it is about +19 degrees. The climatic conditions of the region contribute to the development of winter sports. For example, the Winter Olympics in 1984 was held in Sarajevo.

As already mentioned, the city was founded in 1263year. At that time it was called Vrhbosna. From the 15th to the 19th century it was part of the Ottoman Empire and first had the name Bosna-Saray, after which it was renamed Saray-Ova. In the late XIX - early XX century Sarajevo was under the rule of Austria-Hungary. In 1914, there was a significant historical event: the members of Mlada Bosna, the heir to the throne of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was killed, which was one of the reasons that led to the outbreak of the First World War.

In the period from 1992 to 1995, The capital of Bosnia during the civil war was besieged by the Bosnian Serbs.

The region most developed economicallycountry is Sarajevo. The capital of Bosnia mainly specializes in industry and tourism. Here there are enterprises of textile, food, pharmaceutical, automotive and metalworking industries.

The location of Sarajevo in a valley surrounded by mountains,makes the city very compact and does not allow the possibility of expanding its area. This can not but affect the transport situation. Automobile traffic is very limited due to narrow city streets and a shortage of parking spaces. But this situation makes it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to feel more comfortable. Via Sarajevo, a trans-European highway passes through Budapest, connecting it with Budapest and Ploče. Also through the city there are railway communication routes.

Special mention should be made of educationalinstitutions of Sarajevo. The oldest of them was discovered back in 1531 and is a school of philosophy of Sufism. Also in the city there are several universities and schools of primary and secondary education.
