Rick Allen: the story of the legendary one-armed drummer

Biography

Rick Allen was born in November 1963. This significant event occurred in the city of Dronfield in the UK. Since his early years, Rick has been fascinated by music in its various forms, in particular drums. But at first the talented boy had to play only with the help of the mother's kitchen tools.

When Rick turned ten years old, he convinced his motherwith the pope to buy a drum set, and the parents fulfilled his desire, having bought a tool of excellent quality. Rick Allen immediately promised to return half of the cost of the installation, as soon as he can achieve the proper level of skill.

The guy very quickly achieved success. After 6 months of home drums he began to play in the Smokey Blue team. Later, Rick Allen changed several groups, including Johnny Kalendar Band and Rampant.

A turning point in the life of the drummer came,when he turned 15 years old. It was then that he decided to become a member of the Def Leppard team. And a year later, the guy dropped out of school to deal exclusively with his musical career.

At the same time, the first concerts of the band began, one of which was dedicated to the next birthday of the guy.

The first album of Def Leppard was recordedon the fourteenth of March 1980. After this moment, Rick Allen, along with the rest of the band, began actively touring. At first they were performances within the country, a little later they were replaced by world tours.

The drummer loses his hand

In 1984, the musician was in a car accidenttogether with his girlfriend Miriam. This happened on December 31, when a driver drove out on the road, not allowing the drummer to pass safely. This man provoked Alain to overtake. But having added speed, Rick was unable to notice the turn in time, after which the vehicle crashed into the wall.

Since the drummer does nothe fastened himself with a belt, when he collided with a barrier, he was thrown out of the car, and his left hand was torn off. A nurse who lived near the place of the catastrophe managed to keep the limb alive before the arrival of the ambulance brigade, and provide first aid to Rick Allen. But all these efforts did not save his left hand, after several unsuccessful operations he said goodbye to her.

Life of a musician after an accident

Infection of the blood was the key cause of amputationarms. But Rick Allen is a drummer who, despite the severe depression, did not give up and overcame a lot of difficulties that awaited him. He did not finish his musical career, and after recovering morally and physically, he was able to go further to the goal and remained an active member of the Def Leppard group.

And in 2003, the drummer married for the second time to Lauren Monroe, with whom he lives until now. Recall that the first marriage with Rick Allen has a daughter.

Last year, Wentworth Gallery proudlypresented in a branch in New Jersey the work of a musician from a series called "Rick Allen: Icons and Angels." The work of the legendary drummer could be seen not only at the opening in Short Hills, but also in Philadelphia, Atlanta and South Florida.

This series includes forty-five works, including light shows, paintings and photographs of Rick. The author of the works also visited her and told a little about the history of the works.

From each work sold at this exhibition,part of the funds was deducted for charitable purposes, and all buyers were able to get the medal "Purple Heart", personally signed by Rick Allen. Such an award is usually awarded to soldiers who were injured or killed because of the enemy's attacking actions.
